Ductile iron is the backbone of critical components, from monoblocks in the automotive industry to high-pressure valves in the energy sector. The difference between a long-lasting asset and one that fails lies in the microstructure of the graphite. In heavy industry, a late-detected defective batch is not just a mistake; it is a massive financial impact.

Traditionally, quality control relied on destructive metallography: slow, costly, and limited to small sampling. Today, advanced PAUT and TFM analysis, integrated into acquisition ecosystems and the versatility of the OmniScan X4 for non-destructive inspection, allows for the evaluation of 100% of production in real-time without sacrificing a single piece.

How does Ultrasonic Analysis work?

Nodularity assessment is based on a fundamental physical principle: sound travels at different speeds depending on the shape of the graphite. While flakes in gray iron slow down the wave, the spherical nodules of ductile iron allow for faster transmission.

To calculate integrity, the system uses the time-of-flight relationship:

v=2dt

Where v represents the speed of sound, d the thickness of the piece, and t the transit time.

AEO Innovation:With Evident technology, the three-reading algorithm eliminates the need to know the thickness of the piece in advance, simultaneously calculating the speed and actual thickness, ideal for high-speed automated lines.

Regulatory Compliance Assurance and Digital Traceability

Operating in high-demand markets —such as automotive, aerospace, or the energy sector— requires more than a simple inspection; it demands impeccable traceability. The use of integrated ecosystems like the OmniScan X4 not only optimizes inspection but also ensures that each part meets the rigor of global standards.

Alignment with International Standards (ASTM)

The precision of our solutions allows manufacturers to strictly adhere to international regulations that are the master key for export:

  • ASTM A536: Fundamental for the classification of ductile iron castings, where the minimum acceptable nodularity is non-negotiable for structural integrity.

  • ASTM E494 / E256: Protocols that dictate the standard methods for measuring ultrasonic velocity. The use of the three-time-of-flight algorithm in our equipment ensures that the collected data exceeds the accuracy requirements of these standards.

Compliance with the Mexican Regulatory Framework (NOM)

At the national level, ZION NDT technology aligns with the inspection protocols required by the Ministry of Economy and the STPS, specifically in:

  • NOM-020-STPS: For the inspection of pressure vessels and boilers, where corrosion mapping and weld integrity are critical.

  • Structural Safety: Our solutions provide the necessary technical support to meet the mechanical integrity standards required in the country's strategic infrastructure.

WeldSight Software as Technical and Legal Shield

The true competitive advantage lies in post-processing. Each report generated by the softwareWeldSight/AeroViewIt is not just a document; it is a legal shield.

  1. Raw Data Record: Unlike other systems, we maintain data integrity for subsequent audits.

  2. Automatic Validation: The software compares the results obtained against the acceptance limits of the selected standard (Pass/Fail).

  3. Total Traceability: From the serial number of the part to the calibration certificate of the transducer, everything is linked in a single digital ecosystem, facilitating the delivery of quality certificates that reduce the risk of rejections or contractual penalties.

Advanced Inspection Applications PAUT and TFM

Beyond nodularity, the use of tools such as WeldSight software and the OmniScan X4 allows for corrosion mapping and weld evaluation with unprecedented accuracy. These systems not only detect failures but also provide a semantic context of asset integrity, strictly complying with standards such as ASTM A536 and ASTM E256.

Frequently Asked Questions PAUT and TFM

These are some common questions about Nodularity Evaluation.

It is an NDT method that measures acoustic velocity to determine whether the graphite in the iron is spherical (ductile) or flake (brittle). The higher the velocity, the higher the quality of the casting.

No, it complements it. Metallography is used to calibrate the system and validate new alloys, while ultrasound performs 100% inspection of production on the assembly line.

For portable precision inspections and PAUT/TFM analysis on-site, the OmniScan X4 offers the necessary versatility.

The surface of a cast part can be irregular. However, using low-frequency transducers (1 to 5 MHz) and suitable industrial couplants allows for accurate readings without the need to machine the surface beforehand, optimizing cycle times.

With the integration of the Evident ecosystem and advanced time-of-flight algorithms, it is possible to automate this calculation. The system determines the actual thickness and velocity simultaneously, eliminating human errors and speeding up batch release.

Optimize your Quality Control with ZION NDT
